If you have searched online for a personal injury lawyer, you have probably seen websites covered with badges, seals, and awards claiming the attorney is a "Top Lawyer," "Rising Star," or one of the "Best Attorneys" in a particular field.
Some of those recognitions may be legitimate. Others may be little more than marketing tools.
The important thing is to understand the difference.
Not All Lawyer Awards Are Created Equal
Our office receives frequent invitations to join various "top attorney" lists and award programs. Many of them require payment for membership, advertising, plaques, website badges, or other promotional materials.
That does not necessarily mean every award is meaningless. However, consumers should understand how an award is earned before relying on it when choosing a lawyer.
In fact, the Federal Trade Commission published a consumer alert encouraging people to look beyond awards, seals, and badges when hiring an attorney. The FTC recommends researching the organization behind the award, understanding the selection process, and looking at the attorney's actual experience and accomplishments.
So How Should You Choose a Lawyer?

Most people would never hire a contractor, doctor, or accountant based solely on an award. Choosing a lawyer should be no different.
What Louisiana Lawyers Can and Cannot Say
Many people are surprised to learn that Louisiana attorneys are subject to strict advertising and ethical rules.

That is one reason we believe actions speak louder than awards.
