Defensive Walking and Biking: Staying Safe on Louisiana Roads and Trails

Every year, thousands of pedestrians and bicyclists lose their lives in traffic accidents across the United States, and many more suffer serious injuries requiring emergency medical treatment and long recoveries.

At the same time, communities across Louisiana continue to invest in walking and biking trails that encourage people to get outside and enjoy an active lifestyle.

Here on the Northshore, one of the best examples is the Tammany Trace, a converted railroad corridor stretching more than 30 miles through Covington, Abita Springs, Mandeville, Lacombe, and Slidell.

While trails like the Tammany Trace provide a wonderful place to walk, run, and ride, the greatest danger often arises where the trail intersects with public roads and intersections.

Even when pedestrians and bicyclists have the legal right of way, simple precautions can dramatically reduce the risk of a serious accident.

What Is Defensive Walking?

Most drivers have heard the term "defensive driving."

The same concept applies to pedestrians and bicyclists.

Defensive walking and biking means recognizing that we cannot control the actions of motorists, but we can take steps to reduce our own risk.

Never Assume a Vehicle Will Stop

One of the most dangerous assumptions a pedestrian can make is believing that a driver sees them.

Even when traffic signals or crosswalks give you the right of way, make sure vehicles in every direction are actually slowing down and stopping before entering the roadway.

Make Eye Contact With Drivers

Whenever possible, try to establish eye contact with approaching drivers before crossing in front of them.

A vehicle that appears to be slowing down does not necessarily mean the driver has seen you.

Make Yourself Visible

Visibility becomes especially important during early morning hours, evenings, poor weather, and nighttime conditions.

Reflective clothing, lights, and bright colors can significantly improve visibility for motorists approaching intersections and crossings.

Remove Distractions at Intersections

Headphones and earbuds are great on long walks or bike rides, but intersections require your full attention.

Before crossing, pause the music and focus on the sounds and activity around you.

Slow Down at Crossings

Whether you are running, walking, or riding a bicycle, intersections deserve extra caution.

Taking a few seconds to slow down and assess traffic is far better than spending months recovering from an avoidable injury.

Cyclists should also consider dismounting at particularly busy crossings or intersections with limited visibility.

Expect Mistakes From Drivers

Perhaps the most important principle of defensive walking is simple:

Assume drivers may make mistakes.

Drivers become distracted. They run red lights. They look left while turning right. They focus on vehicle traffic and fail to notice pedestrians or cyclists.

Approaching every intersection with that mindset can help prevent serious accidents.
