Single Moms Can Face Unique Challenges After a Car Accident

When I was very young, my mom was involved in a devastating accident on Interstate 10 near Slidell, Louisiana. She suffered serious injuries, including a fractured pelvis, broken ribs, and a ruptured spleen. She was lucky to survive.

As a young child, I watched firsthand as a single mother tried to recover from serious injuries while continuing to take care of everyday responsibilities. She was missing work, her vehicle was totaled, and the bills certainly didn't stop arriving simply because she had been injured.

We got through it, but only because of her determination.

That experience stayed with me, and over the years I have seen many of the same challenges faced by single moms involved in Louisiana car accidents. While every situation is different, there are a few things that can make the process a little easier.

Transportation Becomes an Immediate Priority

For many single parents, a vehicle is much more than transportation to and from work.

It may also be the only way to get children to school, daycare, medical appointments, extracurricular activities, and everything else that comes with raising a family.

If your vehicle is damaged or totaled, obtaining reliable transportation quickly becomes one of the first major concerns.

Even when another driver caused the accident, using your own collision coverage is often the fastest way to get the repair process started. Waiting for the other driver's insurance company to complete its investigation or obtain a police report can sometimes take days or even weeks.

The same is true for rental vehicles. If you carry rental reimbursement coverage on your own policy, using it may allow you to get back on the road much sooner than waiting for the at-fault insurance company to approve a rental.

If your vehicle is ultimately declared a total loss, it is important to begin thinking about long-term transportation plans as early as possible. Once an insurance company makes a total loss offer, rental benefits often end shortly afterward.

Don't Neglect Your Own Injuries

One thing I have noticed over the years is that moms are often very good at taking care of everyone except themselves.

After a serious car accident, however, taking care of yourself is one of the best things you can do for your family.

Follow your doctor's recommendations. Attend your appointments. If physical therapy or chiropractic treatment is recommended, try to stay consistent with treatment whenever possible.

Many healthcare providers understand the scheduling challenges parents face and are willing to work around school schedules, work obligations, and childcare responsibilities.

Taking care of yourself today may help prevent much larger problems down the road.

Pay Attention to the Insurance Claim Process

Insurance claims can be confusing even under the best circumstances.

Insurance adjusters know that most people have never handled a significant injury claim before, and they also know that single parents often have countless other responsibilities competing for their attention.

You may receive requests to sign medical authorizations, provide recorded statements, or accept an early settlement offer before the full extent of your injuries is known.

That doesn't necessarily mean anyone is acting improperly, but it does mean that understanding your rights and asking questions before signing documents is extremely important.

One of the biggest mistakes we see is people settling claims before they fully understand the extent of their injuries or future medical needs.

You Don't Have to Figure Everything Out Alone

Recovering from a serious car accident while raising children and managing a household can feel overwhelming.

If there is one thing I learned from watching my mother recover from her injuries, it is that asking for help is not weakness.

Whether that help comes from family, friends, healthcare providers, or legal professionals, having support can make an enormous difference during a difficult time.
